Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: What Are You Getting Into?
If you are searching for fighting techniques that rely on punches, quick ducks, and high kicks to the face, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu may not be for you. An exceptional form of martial arts, this style uses your opponents’ strength, size, and weight to win matches, so an “equal match” may not be what it is in other sports when considering those details.
Built upon a foundation of sweeps, strikes, throws, and blocks, this technique is skillful and defensive, rather than offensive. It is used in competition and taught as a self-defense technique. It is available for classes at most gyms around the nation, with very well educated and skilled instructors.
AS with any sport, proper attire and safety is necessary. A crisp, clean uniform (called a Gi) is essential to show the instructor respect and dignity. For your first class, you may be allowed to simply wear a t-shirt and sweat pants or shorts, but you will be required to obtain a correct uniform if training continues. Also, your clothing must be void of all loose extras like belt loops or baggy fabric, as much of Jiu Jitsu is grabbing and holding and these things can cause injury during sparring.
Possible protection includes a helmet to guard your ears, eyes, and forehead, a mouth guard, a cup for men, or athletic tape.
