Tips on finding a good gym
1) You should also make an effort to
discuss the class and the gym with students already enrolled. The best feedback
is straight from the source and current students will give you the best advice.
Also consider the age range of the classes offered. If you are an adult, you may
not want to be in a class of only children, so be sure to specify exactly what
it is you are looking for when talking to gym employees/instructors.
2) Once you have visited a few gyms in your area, make a list of pros and cons
of each. Taking the introductory class at each gym (if they offer one) will give
you a fairly decent example of how the program is run.
3) Also remember that not everyone learns this martial art as a means to compete
in competitions. Self-defense, exercise, and hobby are also great reasons to
join a club, and if that is more your thing, then find a club that suits your
needs.
4) As a beginner, you will wear a white belt, unless your demonstrated skills
suggest skipping the white belt and moving up. Sometimes, students who have
previous training in judo or aikido can choose to test to skip the white belt,
but you will need to prove to your instructor that your skills are indeed
exceptional.

Remember: classes should be fun and educational, so if you are not enjoying your
class, you may want to find another one!
