How To Escape From An Attacker In Just Three Moves in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

As far as martial arts techniques go, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective in the world. If faced with an attacker, you have few options as to how to save yourself, but using one of these moves may do the trick and allow you to get to safety.

1) When attacked or grabbed from behind, spread your feet apart and squat down, widening your base and making you heavier to pick up. On the occasion that you do not have time to do this or you just haven’t done so, you can hook one of your feet around the outside of the attacker’s leg and squat down. Step out and around the attacker so you can see his leg between yours.

Next, fall to the ground, keeping your leg twisted around his. Doing this will make his balance waiver and even the heaviest opponent will fall to the ground. Keep in mind, your goal is to land on your attacker, so that you have the time and space to get up and run out of the dangerous situation.

2) Another situation you may find yourself in occurs when an attacker approaches you from the front. First, guard your head by covering your face and ducking your head into his chest while performing a leg check or any strong kick to either of his legs at the same time. If he is swinging at you, block his arms at the biceps with your hands; grab for his triceps and try to gain control of his arms, with your head still pressed against his chest.

Hopefully, this will create a force of isometric tension that will allow you to move around him, dragging one arm with you. Keep your thigh close to his so he refrains from turning around. This is simply a holding position that you can use for a few moments to plan out which way to run. As soon as you see a clear path, let go and sprint to the nearest point of safety.

3) You may also encounter an attacker that pushes you to the ground as he comes at you from the front. If this occurs, you can shove your knees hard into his chest and try to push him away. Your attacker may be a lot heavier than you, in which case try to protect your face by covering it with your hands and arms to avoid your attacker’s punches.

Don’t panic if he tries to get away. You can turn so your back is on the ground, wrap your legs

tight around his hips, and thrust him backward over your head, stunning him and allowing you to get away without the threat of him chasing you instantly.

With just these three Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves, you may be able to avoid further injury or worse when attacked by a mugger or other criminal by providing yourself enough time to get away, relatively unscathed. Etchings and videos of these moves, among others, can be found easily on the internet, but physical experience such as you will find in a live class will be a lot more helpful and beneficial to your safety.
